Ugatuzi is an initiative of SODNET's innovation programme (Infonet). It enables citizens to track and monitor national and sub-national budgets. "Ugatuzi" is swahili word for Devolution.

Sample image SODNET launched the Open Budget Index (OBI) Report in February of 2009 in Nairobi inviting participants from Uganda, Sudan, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya. The Index is a measure of the level of accessibility of the budget to the citizen.

It’s widely acknowledged that the Kenyan government has been something of a trailblazer when it comes to open data and transparency. The Social Development Network (SODNET), a Kenyan NGO dedicated to fighting the causes and consequences of poverty and disempowerment, has worked consistently to use this data to improve the lives of ordinary citizens through its Infonet programme.

Over 90% in Kenya access internet via their mobile phones-Huduma Stakeholders' Meeting

 

Recently, Huduma stakeholders met to share progress on the Huduma initiative as the team prepares for a National roll-out. With about 26.4 million mobile phone subscribers and over 90% accessing internet through their mobile phones in Kenya (CCK data, 2011), the mobile phone and computer have proved to be vital in strategic advocacy.

Huduma- Highlight of Social Watch 2011 Workshop

The Regional Social Watch capacity building workshop of 2011 brought together social watch activists and civil society organizations from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia and Rwanda.

It aimed at acquainting participants with the work of Social Watch International, its history and working modalities. The workshop gave special highlight to regional perspectives on transparency and accountablity initiatives.

Technology helps Africans hold governments to account

Trust Law- The growing use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in Africa offers great potential for citizens to assess their governments’ commitment to good governance and accountability, experts say.

A slew of ICT platforms, many of which use innovative crowd sourcing techniques, have been developed to track delivery of projects and budgets in a bid to improve governance. One such platform, iWatch is currently being rolled out in Nigeria.

About SODNET

SODNET is an indigenous organisation, established by Non-governmental Organization (NGOs) workers from Kenya as a facility for reflection and action by local groups on causes and consequences of poverty and disempowerment of communities. It aims at facilitating effective strategic alliances among interested people’s and social movements to influence policy-on issues of social development, in particular on resource management, globalisation and information.
