Social Development Network (SODNET) is a not-for-profit non-governmental organization registered in the Republic of Kenya under the Non-governmental Organizations Coordination Act 1990. It was founded in 1994 and incorporated as a legally registered entity in June 1996.
SODNET is an indigenous organisation, which was established by Non-governmental Organization (NGOs) workers from Kenya as a facility to backstop reflection and action by local groups on causes and consequences of poverty and disempowerment of large sections of the Kenyan communities. It aims at facilitating effective strategic alliances among interested people’s and social movements to influence policy-making on issues of social development, in particular on resource management, globalisation and information.
As a network, SODNET’s mandate is anchored on the need to restore institutional integrity and civic sovereignty of the voluntary sector. Accordingly, the organization promotes civic concerns which are geared towards total empowerment of civil society and its critical institutions to influence policy and generate people centred alternatives as a basis for comprehensive and democratic social development of all sections of society.
SODNET activities are undertaken in collaboration with established service-delivery and advocacy NGOs, CBOs, Educational and Knowledge based Institutions. All of the activities are financed through grants and/or gifts provided by various donor agencies.
SODNET is governed by an eight-member Board of Directors, drawn from individuals with expertise on the voluntary sector and/or areas of operation of the organisation. The Secretariat implements the decisions of the Board of Directors. The projects of the Organisation are implemented through four broad programme areas namely, Research and Information Management, Economic Governance and Literacy, Advocacy and Networking and Organisational Development and Institutional Strengthening.
